Your guide
This tour is led by either Marcus Eldh or Simon Green. Both live locally and know the forests, wildlife and winter conditions in this part of Sweden. Your guide sets a calm pace, helps you interpret what you find and makes sure we move through the landscape without unnecessarily disturbing wildlife.
Marcus Eldh
Marcus founded WildSweden in 2003 and lives with his family outside Svärdsjö. Several of the forests on this tour are among his favourite winter places – very much his own backyard. He has spent many days here exploring the landscape.
Simon Green
Simon is a university-trained guide and WildSweden’s site manager in central Sweden, with a particular interest in wildlife and wolves. He has a good eye for tracks, wild animals and birds, and enjoys helping guests notice details they might otherwise walk past.
Accommodation
You stay at two small countryside hotels, with two nights at each. Both offer comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and a warm place to return to after a winter day outdoors. Solo travellers have their own room at no extra cost.
Gysinge Wärdshus
The first two nights are spent at Gysinge Wärdshus, a historic hotel close to Färnebofjärden National Park. The individually decorated rooms combine traditional details with modern comfort, while meals are served in the hotel restaurant.
Trollnäs Gårdshotell
For the final two nights, you stay at Trollnäs Gårdshotell, a small, family-run hotel beside Lake Svärdsjön in Dalarna. Its carefully renovated buildings have a relaxed, rustic character and place us close to the snowy forests we explore.
The program
-
After arriving at Gysinge Wärdshus, we take time to get to know each other and talk through the days ahead. We also visit the Dalälven river, where we watch for otters.
In the evening, we share our first dinner at the hotel and settle into the journey.
-
Today we head into parts of Färnebofjärden National Park where wolves are known to move. We know some of the areas they regularly use and spend the day searching for fresh tracks and other clues, while keeping watch for the wolves and other wildlife.
Otters and White-tailed Eagles are also high on our list. Some Beavers remain active during winter too, and we may see them or find their tracks and trails across the snow and ice.
We move through the landscape on foot and use snowshoes where conditions are suitable. During the day, we stop to cook lunch over an open fire and learn how to read the stories recorded in the snow.
-
After breakfast, we make one final search for otters before travelling north to Dalarna.
After lunch, we explore the forests around Svartnäs on snowshoes, looking for tracks of moose, wolverines, lynx and other wildlife. As darkness falls, we continue with headlamps.
At Trollnäs Gårdshotell, you begin carving your own wooden spoon before dinner.
-
After a relaxed morning, we explore the snowy forests on snowshoes, searching for fresh tracks and learning what they reveal about the animals.
We stop on a frozen lake for lunch cooked over an open fire, with a sauna tent and optional ice bathing.
Back at the hotel, you continue carving your wooden spoon before dinner.
-
After breakfast, we leave Trollnäs but still have time for one more wildlife excursion on the way to Falun. Your guide chooses the location according to recent tracks and winter bird activity and the conditions that morning.
We finish outdoors with a final fika and look back at what the snow has shown us during the journey. Afterwards, we take you to Falun Central Station for your onward train to Stockholm.

Winter conditions vary, so your guide may adjust the locations and order of activities. If snowshoes are not needed, we walk without them. If the lake ice is not safe, dinner and the sauna experience are moved to the lakeshore.
-
We provide insulated winter boots, snowshoes and headlamps. You need to bring warm layers, waterproof outer clothing, a hat and warm gloves. We send you a detailed packing list well before departure and ask for your shoe size before the tour.

We have good chances of seeing otters and winter birds such as white-tailed eagles and woodpeckers. Moose and beavers are also possible.
For wolves, lynx and wolverines, finding tracks is more likely than seeing the animals themselves. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

We travel in a small group with local guides who know the area. We keep our distance from wildlife, avoid unnecessary disturbance and there will be no staged animal encounters.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available if you tell us in advance.
