The plan – a weekend in beaver country

We meet at Sala train station and travel together to Gysinge, where a comfortable base awaits in the heart of one of central Sweden’s richest wetland landscapes.

Over the weekend, we explore Färnebofjärden National Park both on foot and by canoe, with beavers at the heart of the experience. By day, we walk through forest and wetland habitat, looking for lodges, dams, feeding sites and other signs of a landscape shaped by returning beavers. Along the way, there is also the chance to see species such as white-backed woodpecker, otter, white tailed sea eagle, golden eagle and moose.

In the evenings, we head out for long, quiet canoe sessions in prime beaver habitat. This is when the water is calm, the light turns softer, and the best chances begin — to see beavers at close range and experience their world in the right way.

Between excursions, you return to Gysinge for comfort and time to rest. The result is a weekend that combines wildlife, rewilding, stillness and the simple pleasure of being outdoors.

Guide & accommmodation

Your guide

This adventure is guided by Simon Green. He has had a strong passion for paddling canoe since childhood and has led beaver tours in different locations for ten years.

He leads the weekend at a calm pace, helping you read the landscape, understand beaver habitat and create good conditions for respectful wildlife watching. With Simon, you can expect field knowledge, patience and presence throughout the tour.

Two nights at hotel

You stay two nights at Gysinge Wärdshus & Hotel, a peaceful and characterful base in the heart of this historic village.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, giving you time to rest well between walks, paddling and late evenings in beaver habitat. Single rooms are available at an additional cost.

The program

  • You arrive in Sala, where we meet you at the train station and drive together to Gysinge. After check-in, lunch and a short introduction over fika, we head out for the first canoe session of the weekend.

We begin with a practical introduction and time on the water before settling into the rhythm of the landscape. After an outdoor dinner, we continue with an evening canoe safari in prime beaver habitat, when the light softens and the chances of seeing beavers are at their best.

  • After breakfast, we head out for a day in beaver habitat on foot. You explore the forest and wetland edge, looking for tracks, feeding sites, lodges and other signs that reveal how beavers shape the landscape.

We eat lunch outdoors and take time to talk more about beavers, habitat and rewilding in this part of Sweden. Back in Gysinge, the afternoon is free for rest, a walk or a swim before we head out again for another evening canoe safari with dinner outdoors.

  • After breakfast, it is time to check out and conclude the tour. We then drive you back to Sala Train Station.

Questions & Answers

  • There are two evening canoe safaris, both at a calm pace. The focus is on wildlife watching and being out in the landscape, not on covering long distances.

  • No, not compared with many active nature tours. But you should be comfortable walking on uneven ground, getting in and out of a canoe, and spending long evenings outdoors.

  • Yes. Many of our guests travel alone. The group is small, and the atmosphere is calm, friendly and relaxed.

  • You stay at Gysinge Wärdshus & Hotel in spacious and comfortable rooms. It is a comfortable base for the weekend.

We recommend referring to our packing list for all the essentials you’ll need to stay warm and comfortable during the adventure.

  • Wildlife is never guaranteed. But this is excellent beaver habitat, and the weekend is designed to give you a strong chance. Even when sightings vary, you still experience the landscape, the signs of beaver activity, and the wider wildlife of the area.

  • Yes, no problem. Let us know your dietary requirements when booking, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
