Beavers are at the heart of the experience, but this rich and varied landscape also gives us the chance to look for otter, moose, sea eagle, golden eagle and white-backed woodpecker — and sometimes even hear wolves howling at night.

The plan – a day out
We meet at Borlänge train station and drive to a nearby nature reserve, known for its rich wildlife and excellent tracking conditions. This area has a mix of old coniferous forest, wetlands and hills – the perfect place to follow fresh signs of animals.
After a short introduction, we put on wooden forest skis and head out together. The pace is slow and calm. We stop often to look at tracks and signs, talk about behaviour, and learn how different animals move through the landscape.
We take a break for warm blueberry soup and sandwiches outdoors.
As daylight fades, we light a fire and enjoy a simple evening meal in the snowy forest. The atmosphere is quiet, peaceful and unforgettable.
After dinner we return to civilisation – or directly to Dala-Floda Inn for a warm bed and a cosy evening in the village.

Your guide
This adventure is guided by Simon Green. He has had a strong passion for paddling canoe since childhood and has led beaver tours in different locations for ten years.
He leads the weekend at a calm pace, helping you read the landscape, understand beaver habitat and create good conditions for respectful wildlife watching. With Simon, you can expect field knowledge, patience and presence throughout the tour.
Two nights at hotel
You stay two nights at Gysinge Wärdshus & Hotel, a peaceful and characterful base in the heart of this historic village.
Spacious rooms
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, giving you time to rest well between walks, paddling and late evenings in beaver habitat. Single rooms are available at an additional cost.
The program
-
You arrive in Sala, where we meet you at the train station and drive together to Gysinge. After check-in, lunch and a short introduction over fika, we head out for the first canoe session of the weekend.
We begin with a practical introduction and time on the water before settling into the rhythm of the landscape. After an outdoor dinner, we continue with an evening canoe safari in prime beaver habitat, when the light softens and the chances of seeing beavers are at their best.
-
After breakfast, we head out for a day in beaver habitat on foot. You explore the forest and wetland edge, looking for tracks, feeding sites, lodges and other signs that reveal how beavers shape the landscape.
We eat lunch outdoors and take time to talk more about beavers, habitat and rewilding in this part of Sweden. Back in Gysinge, the afternoon is free for rest, sauna or a swim before we head out again for another evening canoe safari with dinner outdoors.
-
After breakfast, it is time to check out and conclude the tour. We then drive you back to Sala Train Station.
