Meet your guide

This experience is led by one of WildSweden’s senior wolf guides — Marcus Eldh or Simon Green.

Both have long experience working in active wolf territories, guiding with patience, field knowledge, and a deep respect for wildlife. The focus is never on chasing encounters, but on reading tracks, understanding behaviour, and spending time in the landscape where wolves live.

Our mission is to spread awareness about wolves in Scandinavia. We also aim to act as an example to show that tours done in a responsible way can provide substantial income to the local community.
— Marcus Eldh, founder of WildSweden

Accommodation

You stay two nights at Färna Herrgård, a historic country hotel set between lakes and forests in an active wolf territory.

The hotel offers comfortable rooms, good food, and quiet surroundings — an important contrast to long hours outdoors. Returning here each night gives space to rest, warm up, and reflect before heading back out into the forest the following day.

The program

  • We arrive at the hotel and settle in before heading out into the forest.

As daylight fades, we walk through an active wolf territory, learning to read tracks, movement, and subtle signs in the landscape.

We share a simple, prepared dinner outdoors before the night falls.

Later in the evening, we stop, wait, and listen. Often, wolves howl in the night. There are no guarantees — being there is the experience.

We return to the hotel late, for rest and a warm bed.

  • The day begins with breakfast before returning to the forest.

If conditions allow, we may head out early for a quiet morning walk. Seeing wolves is rare, but the possibility is always there.

    The focus is tracking.
We follow paw prints, paths, and other subtle signs that reveal how wolves move through their territory.

Along the way, we talk about wolf behaviour, communication, and conservation — shaped by what we encounter.

As night falls, we head back out for another long evening of waiting and listening.
Often, wolves howl in the darkness. There are no guarantees.

Late return to the hotel for rest.

  • The final morning begins without hurry.

After breakfast, there is time to relax — perhaps a walk, perhaps the spa — before we leave the forest behind.

We travel back to Köping for a shared lunch before departures toward Stockholm or Arlanda, bringing the experience to a gentle close.

I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who is seeking reconnection with nature and self, to connect with likeminded adventurers. It was an incredible experience and I am excited about joining future adventures with WildSweden!

THIS adventure IS RATED EXCELLENT BY EARLIER GUESTS!

“one of the most magical things I’d ever heard”

From an article in Financial Times, October 2025:

“…it wasn’t scary in the slightest. The wolves sounded like what they were; a close family looking out for each other and making their presence known. It was one of the most magical things I’d ever heard. Love it!“

“Perhaps the most magical moment of my life”

From an article in The New York Times, April 2021:

“Perhaps the most magical moment of my life: sitting at the edge of a lake, surrounded by a forest and the semidarkness of Swedish summer, listening to the howling of wolves just a few hundred meters away. They knew we were there, of course, but chose to remain nearby, making this auditory encounter one entirely on their terms.”

Frequently asked questions

  • Wolves in Sweden are very shy and difficult to see in the wild, mainly since the landscape is flat and the forests are dense. Our main focus on this tour is therfore to listen for howls, search for tracks like paw prints, territorial markings, killed prey and to learn and understand.

If the current situation is promising, we may also watch for wolves at some strategic location. Although our guests rarely get to see Wolves it does happen occasionally.

And most of our guests agree that it is more impressive to hear the howls of a pack in a dark forest, than to see them.

  • Yes, very likely. We hear wolves howl on most tours. For many of our guests, this is an unexpected highlight of their visit to Sweden.

  • Yes, there is no danger whatsoever. Wolves are extremely shy and don’t attack people.

The safety precautions during this trip are more about making sure we all stay warm and dry, that we sleep well and we don’t fall while hiking Our guides are experienced and know how to handle any situation that may occur.

  • We always stay at a respectful distance as we don't want to disturb the wolves. It is of course in our interest that the wolves do not move to another area.

  • We provide a headlamp and rubber boots. You only need to bring normal outdoor clothing suitable for summer evenings.

    >> See our full packing list here

  • We are offering this trip a few times each Summer between July and September. See booking calendar at this page for available dates. This tour may also be arranged for private groups on request at other dates.

  • Groups are small (up to 7 participants). People join for the same reason: to learn, to be out there, and to experience wolf territory with respect. The shared rhythm of walking, waiting, and listening creates a natural sense of connection.

  • Take a train from Stockholm or Arlanda airport to Köping station, a 1 hour 20 minutes journey. We'll meet you at Köping station and take you to the wolf territory.

  • We will eat all meals out in the forest, sometimes by a campfire. Meals will be simple but filling and tasty, and we all help out with cooking and grilling.

Some of the meals will be prepared in beforehand and just heated.

Veggie, gluten free or no fish, we take any diet just as seriously as anything else as long as you let us know in beforehand.

  • 2–5 km per day; it depends on the current wildlife situation.

  • We have organised wolf tracking trips in Sweden since 2005, working in close collaboration with the Scandinavian Wolf Project and local county board rangers. This ensures an authentic experience while contributing to long-term wildlife monitoring and conservation.

By choosing this adventure, you also support conservation through our Save the Forest Fund and contribute to the local economy. We share your commitment to protecting wild nature and supporting rewilding efforts.

→ Read more about our conservation work here.

  • At WildSweden, we share your vision for respecting and preserving nature. We offer tours with local guides, comfortable accommodations in nature, and access to off-the-beaten-path areas, creating an exceptional and authentic experience. • Yes. You can request a private tour on other dates. Private tours are also a good option for families, groups of friends, or guests who want their own pace.

  • Easy. Most walks are slow and unhurried, with stops along the way. On some occasions we may walk off-trail in uneven forest terrain, sometimes in darkness with headlamps.

  • Often until after midnight, as this is when wolves are most active. In September, wolves tend to be active earlier, so we usually return to the hotel much earlier. Late breakfasts allow time to rest the following mornings.

  • Yes. This is a calm, guided experience with hotel nights and a small group. You don’t need outdoor or wildlife experience — just curiosity, patience, and normal fitness.

  • Minimum age is 12 years. This experience includes late evenings and time outdoors, so it’s best suited for people who are comfortable with quiet waiting and slow walks.

  • This is not designed as a photography tour. You’re welcome to bring a camera, but the focus is on tracking, learning, and quiet listening — often in low light.

Listen to our sound recordings of howling wolves

Wolf howling is a natural form of communication and is most common after dark. That’s why this experience focuses on long, quiet evenings in wolf territory. Often, we hear wolves howl. Sometimes we don’t. When it happens, it is always on the wolves’ terms.
